BROOME HISTORICAL SOCIETY – 50TH ANNIVERSARY

In February 1975, over drinks at the Continental Hotel's Lugger Bar, Broome locals gathered with one pressing concern—historical treasures were vanishing from the town. This meeting sparked the formation of the Broome Historical Society (BHS), and set in motion a mission to protect and preserve Broome’s unique cultural heritage. Later that year, BHS made its public debut at the Shinju Matsuri with a display featuring diving suits, schooner models, and a vintage printing press.

By 1981, after years of tireless fundraising and community support, BHS transformed the Old Customs House into the Broome Historical Museum, finally giving its growing collection a permanent home. The 1980s saw major milestones, including Broome’s Centenary celebrations in 1983 and the conservation of the historic recompression chamber. The Society also established Broome’s first heritage trail.

The 1990s and 2000s brought major expansions. The old CWA building was acquired and transformed into the Rae Val Annexe, creating much-needed space for exhibitions. BHS also embraced the digital age, launching its first website and winning prestigious Museum Australia Awards for groundbreaking projects. The restoration of the Sailmaker’s Shed earned international recognition, receiving an honourable mention in the UNESCO Heritage Awards.

Over the years, BHS has published several historical titles, preserving local stories for future generations. More recently, the Society launched its online series of virtual museums, giving people around the world a chance to explore Broome’s history from anywhere.

As it marks fifty years of preserving Broome’s stories, BHS is looking to the future with plans to expand exhibitions, create more interactive and accessible displays, and upgrade its facilities to better share Broome’s unique heritage. The Society is excited to welcome more visitors, share new experiences, and ensure Broome’s rich history continues to inspire for generations to come.
